The Significance of 2012 … Fact and Fiction!

I am frequently asked about the meaning of the date December 21, 2012. Many pop prophecies have identified the year 2012 as an apocalyptic time, a cataclysmic end of the world as we know it, a doomsday event. But what is it really?

The answer is that December 21, 2012, marks the end date of a calendar developed by the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica, most recently used by the Maya. Their calendar describes a cycle, like ours, but uses a different number of days. Their concept of time further describes cycles within larger cycles. December 21, 2012 is the end date of the Mayan cycle known as the “Long Count.” Like our New Year’s Day, it is both the end of an old cycle and the start of a new cycle—it is not the end of the world!

What is interesting about this date from an astronomical perspective is that on this date the winter’s solstice sun rises on the horizon in alignment with our Milky Way’s galactic center. What is astounding about this is that this event happens only once every 26,000 years! Not coincidentally, this date is embedded in the transition period between the Piscean and Aquarian ages. We are moving into the Aquarian age, setting the stage for a new, approximately 2,100-year cycle.

Moving away from Piscean themes, best described by faith-based and religious values, we head toward the development of science and technology to save our souls in the Aquarian age. A new age of enlightenment is to be found in the marriage of scientific “practical” sensibilities to spiritual awareness and ethical values. It’s no longer just about our relationship to god. We are already developing our relationship to the collective interest and the natural order, as well as to god.

So how do we best relate to the December 21, 2012, date? I suggest we use it to mark and celebrate a very important transition in the elemental energies that define and frame how it is we live. The real prediction lies in the achievement of great technological advances integrated and in service to our spiritual consciousness. There is great hope on the planet that we can start a “new day” by altering our minds, thus changing our lives, personally and collectively. The renewal of the Mayan calendar points to now as the perfect time!

What follows is in large part the influence of Venus’s current travel through the sign of Aries until the early part of June.

Aries—Happy birthday! Be extra mindful of your reactions in the coming weeks. Placing your attention here will clear your path toward greater self-actualization. Like a blade of grass, grow toward the sunshine. Concentrate your energy. Recognize the ways you shortchange yourself and start treating yourself as your best friend, first!

Taurus—Happy birthday! Dreams and visions have an unusual power over your waking life this spring. Take time to investigate your motivations and make an effort to simplify your routine. Slow down and listen to the stillness. While there is plenty of action on the horizon, take time to be quieter now!

Gemini—Happy birthday! By nature you can be easily distracted. Watch for ways the universe invites you to cut out elements of your life that are superfluous. Focusing your attention on the important tasks at hand will prove most rewarding. Associates and friends play a crucial role in setting new goals.

Cancer—Through the next few months any effort to integrate yourself more fully in your community and professional life will yield personal satisfaction and fulfillment. Remember, how well you work with others is a theme that is “up” in your life, especially if you are a June baby.

Leo—Learning more about the true definition of conservation is now the name of your game. Keep your eye on the ball and remain patient with your finances. This, too, will change. Clear communication and honesty, above all with yourself, are the keys to your success.

Virgo—New aspects of yourself continue to be revealed through your contact with others. Focusing on common goals, instead of differences, will smooth out the wrinkles of cooperation. Resentments and hurts can be minimized though honest dialogue.

Libra—Take pleasure in your friendships and the making of new acquaintances as Venus two-steps her way through Aries in the spring sky. Nurture the qualities you hold dear in your heart while striving for balance. Enjoy the present moment. Be here now!

Scorpio—The routine of everyday life sets the tone for the coming couple of months. Different facets of your life come together and blend into one lovely panorama. If you don’t like what you see, make changes now. The devil is in the details! Do what you love; love what you do.

Sagittarius—While Venus lingers in Aries through early June, set aside time to be in nature, engage in your favorite sport, and recreate. The seemingly more important and serious aspects of living aren’t going away. There is a season for everything. Cut loose just for now!

Capricorn—Pluto, the god of the underworld, calls you, especially those born in late December. He reigns over rebirth and transformation, mysteries and all treasures. You already sense your calling, but the first step is to take the plunge into the unknown. Trust that more will be revealed.

Aquarius—Communication in its many forms is the most useful tool in your kit during the coming weeks. Reaching out to family and further into your community will present worthwhile opportunities for mutually beneficial relationships. One hand washes the other!
