Sept/Oct 2008

Mother Goddess, Goddess of Love, Fertility Goddess, Inanna, Hesperus, Aphrodite these are only a few of the names we have used to refer to Venus, the brightest shining planet we call our morning and evening star. So bright, Venus outshines all other stars and planets in the night sky. The symbol for Venus is a circle above a cross, symbolizing spirit over matter. Thus Venus represents higher values and aspirations over material desires.

Venus is the second planet from our sun, has an orbit of 225 days, and takes 243 days to complete one revolution. The atmospheric pressure at the planet’s surface is 92 times that of Earth. The orbital pattern of Venus describes a beautiful five-pointed star in the sky. For about two months a year Venus cannot be seen. In August 2007 Venus appeared in the morning sky, low in the east, shortly before sunrise. She disappeared from view in early May. In mid-July she reappeared in the evening sky, where she will remain for the rest of the year.

In astrology, Venus is associated with relationships, the arts, and resources, specifically money. In our horoscope, the placement of Venus sheds light on what it is we value, both spiritually and materially. She plays a strong hand in our relationships and what we enjoy. People born with Venus in the morning sky tend to rush into love impulsively, acting before thinking. On the other hand, people born with Venus in the evening sky tend to be reflective and engage more thoughtfully with others.

The mythological goddess Venus was the bringer of all pleasures. However, her jealous and vengeful instincts are often disregarded, much to the regret of those who fail to consider the dark side of pleasure. As one story goes, she was unfaithful to her husband while enjoying a long-term affair with Mars. She was possessive and jealous, wreaking vengeance on any and all competition. Nevertheless, Venus symbolizes love and beauty in life.

In our modern horoscopes Venus reflects our values, both material and spiritual. She influences our relationships, our wallets, art, and all things beautiful and harmonious. In traditional Western astrology she is said to rule the signs of Taurus and Libra. Both of these signs are known for their creative talents, social graces, and appreciation for all things beautiful. These qualities can be attributed to their association with Venus.

During September and October this year Venus will be in the signs of Libra and Scorpio. While she’s in Libra, make the most of social events and creativity. “Balance” will be the key to harmonious relationships. While she’s in Scorpio, you can expect passions to rise, and the trivial niceties enjoyed while Venus was in Libra will be replaced by deeper and more intense experiences.

It is best to read your rising sign, or ascendant (if you know it), as well as your sun sign when reading astrological columns. Enjoy!

Aries—September brings opportunities for starting constructive changes at work. Be a team player while pushing forward your ideas. The full moon in Aries on October 14 provides you the energy required to achieve your current objectives.
